MAROONED! - Background Story

MAROONED! - Experience the thrill!

SAFTEY ADVICE: This adventure can get intense!  If your not used to intense VR experiences then please take care and it's advised that you initially play this game whilst sitting for your own safety.

Marooned!

Experience the thrill of being marooned on a desert island, feel the fear of utter isolation get obliterated by the power of survival. When rescue isn't an option you must save yourself.  Gain vital survival skills, find clues and craft items that will help you discover a way off the island.

You start the game locked inside a log cabin, find a way to escape and explore the island, travel anywhere you wish your only boundary is the ocean.  The last poor souls trapped kept a journal as they worked on an escape plan, sadly they never managed to see it through but maybe you can.  The journal has long since deteriorated but some pages remain, these remaining parchments are strewn about the island, they have drawings on them which hold clues, certain drawings may be maps if they have a compass heading on them and some parchments contain drawings that will teach you new skills.  If you find any of these study them carefully and question every little detail from the number of items depicted to the direction of small things like footprints and arrows.

We don't want to give to much away and spoil the fun but there is so much more to this game than first meets the eye, the island holds many secrets and you'll face many challenges along your adventure.  One challenge in particular involves climbing across piece's of rope knotted together high above a valley floor, for a good workout try climbing across using only your hands!

You can climb the mountains, abseil down sheer cliff faces or walk through deep valleys and eerie dark forests, you can even swim in the ocean or lakes and if you can find them you can explore sub terraranan caves and ice sake on a frozen lake.  Alternatively you could just relax on the sandy beaches, no matter where your adventure takes you always keep a look out for pages of the journal.

Skills, Abilities & Crafting Tools

You can craft useful tools in the game by placing certain items together, some items take skill to craft which you'll need to learn, learning new skills or gaining abilities is done by reading certain parchments or finding special items and you'll receive a game message when you do.  (see below).

Game messages & Heads up display (HUD)

You will receive game messages through the HUD which displays them in your field of view, when you gain any skills or abilities in the game you will receive a message, they will appear for a few seconds but you can press the "A" button on your left controller to read the message again.

Health

You can find a watch in the game that has sensors to monitor your health without this watch you'll have to rely on your hearing, if you hear your heart beat it's a sign to slow down and take it easy the less energy you use the faster you will heal unless you are freezing to death or drowning then you'll need to move and move fast!

Finding hidden treasure on your journey will help boost your moral this contributes to healing from minor injuries you gain along your adventure, small injuries can take a toll so be carful.

Avoid getting stung by poisonous insects they usually nest around water and their stings contain a poison which slows down your ability to heal.

You also use up health diving underwater, the rate you use up health depends on how deep you dive. Buoyancy also becomes a factor when swimming, rocks will have a negative effect on your buoyancy and logs will have a positive effect, so be mindful of what objects you have in your backpack before jumping into deep water, the last thing you want to do is jump into deep water carrying a backpack full of rocks unless you want to quickly sink to the bottom.

Save Game

The game remembers if you destroy or move anything except for barrels and talismans these items reset to their original location once you die or exit, you'll need to reach a game save point to keep these items.  Game save points are mostly the cabins, once you enter a cabin the game will automatically save your progress. To start a brand new game press the dial on your watch or burn the interactive scroll in a log fire, both methods will clear your progress and start a new game from the very beginning (this cannot be undone).

Guardian floor level:

The floor level in the game can be adjusted by changing the floor level in the guardian.

Controls & settings scroll

When the game starts you will find a scroll hanging on the cabin wall, this scroll contains the game controls and settings, using this scroll you can create a more personalised gaming experience.  you can customise your virtual hands by making a pointing gesture with your thumb down and touching a skin tone on the scroll.

Special items you can find on the island:

This watch can be found in the game it has a compass to help you navigate the island and if you have the natural orienteering ability a red needle will appear on the compass pointing you in the right direction when you read certain maps/parchments (usually they have a compass heading on them) the needle will also appear to help you navigate cave systems if you also have the cave guide).  The watch also has sensors that will track your health and how much treasure you have accumulated, you can change the wrist you wear the watch by either pressing the clasp on the watch strap or grabbing the watch and just placing it on your other wrist.

The main dial on the watch if pressed will start a brand new game, be advised once pressed your current game including all progress you have made will be lost, this cannot be undone.

If you loose the watch the only other way to reset the game completely is to burn the games control scroll in a log fire.

Hidden treasure chests containing gold coins can be found on the island and it is rumoured two of these chests contain a fortune in gold coins.

This item allow you to heal twice as fast as normal.

This skill allows you to hold your breath underwater for a longer period of time.

This skill gives you natural orienteering ability so once you read any map or parchment that has a compass heading on it your watch will point you in the right direction.

This skill only works if you have the natural orienteering ability it allows you to navigate through cave systems.

You'll need to have a natural orienteering ability to use this map, the map has been ripped in half, each half can be used with the compass to locate the other half.  So you can used this map to remember a location on the island, just drop a piece of the map at a location then later you can return to that location by using the remaining peace with the compass.

It will be important to find weapons you can use to protect yourself when exploring, there are a number of weapons you can find on the island, so whether you prefer to charge in attacking anything that moves and leave carnage in your wake or stealthily move  through the shadows and silently attack without leaving a single foot print, your going to need a weapon.

Weapons you can find on the island:

A medieval sword also exists somewhere on the island, it might look a bit rusty after being lost for centuries but wield it with extreme caution as this sword is the most powerful weapon on the island!

You can also coat some of the weapons or projectiles in poison or set them alight to make them more deadly,  poison needs a few seconds to take effect and setting them alight will remove any poison but it enhances there destructive power.

Blowpipes: To use blowpipes place a dart in the end and bring pipe to mouth then pull the trigger on the controller.  The dart tips are coated with a deadly poison that takes effects after a few seconds, be careful when handling these darts.

Rocks: Rocks can do a lot of damage but are heavy to carry.

Spears: A few spears will be lethal to most things but it may take some practice to master throwing these.

Bow & Arrow: The bow is a formidable weapon and lethal at long distances, to use it just place the back of an arrow against the middle of the bow string, the arrow stays in place until you pull back the string and release it.

Rare Gold Coins

There is more than one kind of treasure on the island, there's chests of gold and also treasure in the form of rare gold coins, these are not just coins however they are in fact talismans that emit a strange energy, you'll know when you find one so watch out for them along your adventure.

We would like to thank all our players and as a bit thank you, we will bury one bitcoin on the island to be discovered, you will need to escape the island before you'll beable to access it, this may already be on the island, it depends on how well the game

The island may seem tranquil some might say it's a paradise but be under no illusion this island is a treacherous place.

A word to the wise always keep alert when climbing the narrow mountain paths where one miss step will be your last!  The forests are dark and dangerous places these should never be entered unless you have quick reflexes and if you dare to swim in the deep lakes stay calm because if you panic its game over!  Not forgetting the ocean there are strong currents around the island that can easily drag you out to sea and the ocean has a way of relaxing you so you forget how much danger your in!

This adventure is not for the faint of heart, it will take great skill and will test your survival instincts to their core.

Before you go to the island only an elite few will ever manage to escape it, if your are one of them you will have earned the right to be on the escapees wall of fame, which hanging in the island tavern.

To be added to the wall of fame you must to send us an email with the title ESCAPED and in the email text leave the player name you wish to be on the parchment and tell us what happens when you escape the island including what's on the last parchment.

Wall of Fame email: escaped@juicygrapeapps.com
